Fundamentally, a rheumatologist is a doctor who treats rheumatism, an old-fashioned word that alludes to diseases of joints, bone, tendons and muscles. However, a rheumatologist also treats autoimmune diseases that affect the joints but can also affect other organs like eyes, lungs, kidneys, nerves and other internal organs. Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis, or degenerative arthritis, is the most common form of arthritis in the United States. It can affect a variety of joints and can lead to significant pain and disability. Appropriate use analgesics, joint injections, physical therapy can improve quality of life of many patients.

Rheumatoid arthritis

It is the most common form of chronic inflammatory arthritis or autoimmune arthritis. It often causes joint swelling and redness along with pain and significant morning stiffness. The treatment of rheumatoid arthritis has evolved tremendously that can slow down the disease process drastically.

Osteoporosis

It literally translates to bone fragility and is common cause of spontaneous fractures especially in older individuals. Several medications could help prevent thinning of bone and reducing the risk of osteoporotic fractures.

Psoriatic Arthritis

These are other forms of inflammatory arthritis which has the potential to affect the spine in addition to involving other peripheral joints. These frequently occur with skin conditions like psoriasis or GI conditions like Crohn’s disease. Several oral and injectable drugs including biologics could be used to treat these conditions

Ankylosing Spondylitis

These are other forms of inflammatory arthritis which has the potential to affect the spine in addition to involving other peripheral joints. These frequently occur with skin conditions like psoriasis or GI conditions like Crohn’s disease. Several oral and injectable drugs including biologics could be used to treat these conditions

Spondylarthritis

These are other forms of inflammatory arthritis which has the potential to affect the spine in addition to involving other peripheral joints. Lupus

It is a multisystem autoimmune condition that can affect the joints, the lining of lungs and heart, blood counts, kidneys, brain and skin. It can be very mild to being very severe. It often requires treatment with immunosuppressive medications and close monitoring of disease by a rheumatologist.

Scleroderma and Myositis

These are rare connective tissue disease that can often be very debilitating. They have the potential to involve the lungs, joints, skin and other internal organs. Treatment with immunosuppressives is often required.

Vasculitis

Vasculitis is a group of rare disorders causing inflammation of blood vessels, both arteries and veins, and can affect any age group of patients. There are many types of vasculitis like giant cell arteritis, ANCA associated vasculitis, polyarteritis nodosa, and Henoch Schonlein purpura and can cause severe multisystem illness.

Gout and Crystal Arthritis

Gout and pseudogout and extremely common conditions causing severe pain and inflammation of various joints. These conditions can be treated and prevented very easily.

Bursitis

These are extremely common musculoskeletal conditions which can be cause by repetitive use, trauma of inflammatory arthritis condition. These conditions include rotator cuff tendonitis, trochanteric bursitis, Achilles tendonitis and fibromyalgia.
